THE DENIM GUIDE

The maternity styles you need to know and how to wear them now

Jeans are the one piece of maternity clothing you can’t cheat. As you reach the later stages of pregnancy you will need denim that has been especially designed to accommodate a growing bump. Luckily our favourite brands have adapted their fashion-forward styles for pregnancy. From jumpsuits to leather-look designs, you can still wear the latest styles when you’re expecting. Maternity denim can be worn through all nine months so it’s best to invest early. It’s also a fashion saviour for the fourth trimester – you’ll never be so grateful for an elastic waistband as in the days post-birth.

skinny

The details: A staple of modern women’s wardrobes, slim-fitting jeans are even more essential when expecting as a lean silhouette balances a voluminous upper half.
How to style them: Wear with A-line tops or boyfriend knits then complete the look with flat boots or loafers.
Ideal for: The third trimester. The body-conscious cut acts as a sharp counterpoint to feminine curves when your stomach is at its fullest.

 straight

The details: Straight leg jeans have a timeless appeal. Wear this versatile style cropped or cuffed at the ankle for the most up-to-date finish.
How to style them: Partner with a button-down boyfriend shirt and sneakers for an off-duty look with an androgynous twist.
Ideal for: The first trimester. A straight cut will subtly camouflage the curve of a growing baby bump.

 coated

The details: In a high-shine or a leather-look finish, coated denim elevates maternity jeans from an everyday essential to a standout piece.
How to style them: A feminine silk blouse and pointed pumps for a fresh take on after-dark glamour when expecting.
Ideal for: The second trimester – by now it is obvious you are pregnant so embrace your bump and dress up in a statement design.

SHOP COATED DENIM>

 boyfriend

The details: The relaxed cut of this borrowed-from-the-boys piece imparts a laid-back feel.
How to style them: Pair with a leather biker and tee for a casual take or add a statement knit and ankle-strap heels for lo-fi luxe.
Ideal for: The first or the fourth trimester. The low-waist, boyish silhouette has a slimming effect.

SHOP BOYFRIEND DENIM>

overalls

The details: A maternity classic since the ’70s, a denim jumpsuit or dungarees offer a one-piece style solution to effortless cool when expecting.
How to style it: Layer over a lightweight tee then accessorise with slides or sneakers in summer. In cooler weather turn to a fine-knit, turtleneck top and pointed-toe ankle boots.
Ideal for: Every stage of expecting. An all-in-one will conceal a tell-tale swell in your first trimester and stylishly encompass a blossoming bump in the later months of pregnancy.

SHOP ALL IN ONE DENIM>

bootcut

The details: Best in a dark wash, the added flare at the cuff balances out a bump, while the slim fit through the leg elongates your pins.
How to style it: Team with a fitted top and poncho-style cover-up for an added 70s feel.

NEED TO KNOW

Maternity denim comes in two styles. Which woman are you – over-the-bump or under-the-bump?

 over
Jeans with elastic tabs at either side of the waist are a more discrete option if you prefer a ‘non-maternity’ denim look. This style is perfect for the first and fourth trimester when your stomach is not as overtly rounded. Created with a stretch ‘belly band’ to support and cover a growing bump, this design is best if you are conscious about exposing your stomach. You may want to consider wearing a nude camisole if you opt for a style made with dark elastic so as to avoid the band being visible under light-coloured tops.
