It’s the social media platform that’s made for motherhood. We reveal nine stylish and inspirational mothers to follow on Instagram
More than any other form of social media, Instagram is made for capturing the magical moments of motherhood. From a gorgeous newborn on rumpled white sheets, to a playful toddler splashing about in puddles on a sunny autumn morning this visual platform, perfectly frames the highs of raising children. While it may sometimes present an overly idealised version of parenting, it has also been seized upon by mothers around the world as a way of building a supportive online community. The Sunday Times reported last year that more than half of 2,000 mothers interviewed were more influenced by social media than adverts. From Paris to Sydney, here we reveal some of our favourite Insta Mamas to follow for inspiration and speak to them abut how they personally approach #MotherhoodThroughInstagram.
SARA STRAND, NORWAY – 21K FOLLOWERS
Mother to two little boys, and founder of style blog Sara Strand, Sara’s Instagram has the signature Scandi touch, with airy, minimalist photos in pastel hues laced with bright accents. Although, this is something the stylish mother has found tricky of late, saying “In Norway it’s dark around 4pm in winter…the light is a big challenge!”. But it doesn’t stop her, as she admits “sharing is caring…I get a kick from the feedback.” When it comes to her children she’s careful about how much she reveals, but after years of blogging she relishes the opportunity to get to know the faces of her readers, citing Instagram as where she is most social. AMANDA WATTERS, USA – 173K FOLLOWERS
Founder of blog It’s The Little Things, Amanda Watters documents motherhood and keeping the home. Her three smiling children are a prominent feature, mixed with dreamy interiors and snippets of a Kansas City lifestyle that makes the ordinary look appealing. She aims to capture the “simple moments… where I’m nursing Alfie in bed, making a holiday craft with Stella or watching Theo play with his beloved trucks.” When we ask her what she chooses not to share, she answers those blurry, messy photos that “exude love” and feel “too special to send out into the world” but remain amongst her family’s favourite pictures. Follow Amanda here.
MASHA ROTAR, UK – 142K FOLLOWERS
Founder of a modern furniture store, a hair salon and a restaurant, Masha is also mother to a baby girl and a young toddler, who she calls her “two little blessings” and her “greatest inspiration”. Featuring picnics, sibling love and cute baby outfits in tones of white and blush pink, her pictures depict a dreamy view of motherhood. There are some moments she prefers not to post, like breastfeeding, saying she “doesn’t feel comfortable sharing such a personal moment”, although she admires those who do, admitting that motherhood can be lonely and her Instagram addiction is rewarded by “the community…. those who share the same struggles, joys and passions.” Follow Masha here.
SARAH VAN DEN BOSCH, BELGIUM – 22K FOLLOWERS
Belgium blonde Sarah is both entrepreneur and mother, with an online shop and blog Elle Milla. With posts on style, motherhood and inteiors, her Instagram feed is simultaneously entertaining and endearing. In a platform that can be taken a little too seriously when it comes to stylised pictures, her down-to-earth approach to posting (check out the video of her son and baby crying simultaneously), makes her the kind of mother you want to hang out with. Follow Sarah here.
LEIA SFEZ, FRANCE – 42K FOLLOWERS
French blogger and founder of children’s leggings brand Diapers & Milk, Leia epitomises Parisian chic. Currently pregnant with her second child, we love following her for snippets of pregnancy and parenting in the French capital. In an understated palette of grey, white and blue she makes the everyday routine of motherhood – grabbing a takeaway coffee or strolling with a buggy – look effortlessly stylish. She also has a sense of humour too – poking fun at herself for her obsession with monochrome and being late to the selfie-stick craze. Follow Leia here.
TAYLOR MORGAN, USA – 105K FOLLOWERS
Having started her blog in just 2013, Taylor of Little Blonde Book is already hot on the heels of established mummy bloggers; with an addictive Instagram feed and 105k followers (and counting). Based in South Carolina, she mixes lifestyle, motherhood and fashion with a girl-next-door attitude. Only a few weeks away from giving birth to her second child, we also love her statement maternity looks – think leather jackets and over-the-knee boots. Follow Taylor here.
SARA TASKER, UK – 115K FOLLOWERS
Sara’s feed encapsulates a Bronte-esque romanticism, with brooding shots of the English countryside rendered in deep wintery tones. Combining motherhood with blogging, she has a rustic aesthetic with lifestyle shots that could be straight out of an interiors magazine. We also love her sweet and funny ‘Notes for My Daughter’ section on her blog Me & Orla. An Instagram guru, she offers one-to-one mentoring on how to improve your own feed. However, we are content just to look at her stunning pictures and dream of escaping to the wild Yorkshire moors. Follow Sara here.
SAI DE SILVA, USA – 113K FOLLOWERS
Quite possibly the best-dressed mother-daughter pair on Instagram, NYC-based Sai, documents her 3-year-old daughter London Scout’s fashion-forward outfits and adventures in the Big Apple. If you’re ever in need of sartorial inspiration for mummy and me dressing (#twinning anyone?), this is the account to follow. In metallic biker jackets, tulle tutus and flares, the mini fashionista and her curly-haired mother have racked up over 113,000 followers and now have their own wildly popular blog, Scout The City. Despite this Sai says that London remains unaware of her fame and is just a regular toddler – albeit a very stylish one. Follow Sai here.
MARCIA LEONE, AUSTRALIA – 46K FOLLOWERS
Lifestyle-journalist-turned blogger Marcia set up notsomumsy as a place for busy mums who juggle fashion, playdates and “the occasional splash of rosé”. Describing herself as living a “holistic lifestyle, whilst eating Nutella from the jar” the Sydney-based mother’s all-out honesty about the realities of motherhood has won her more than 46k followers. However she maintains that privacy is still important, saying she has a ‘phones down’ day every week, to focus on spending time with her son Archie. But the “gram” as she affectionately calls it is more than just a social platform – it’s where she’s joined a community and met some “besties” along the way. Follow Marcia here.
