The Co-Founder of The Tot on her eco-conscious approach to motherhood
At a time when we’re all so much more aware of what we eat, what we put on our skin and above all on our baby’s, Russian entrepreneur Nasiba Adilova has tapped into our eco-conscious approach to motherhood. With the drive of a woman on a mission for change, she’s also the style-savvy, forward-thinking kind that has 90+k followers who want to watch her do it.
A year ago Adilova co-launched The Tot – a website dedicated to all things innovative, healthy, safe and stylish for modern mamas and their little ones – with best friend and fellow mama Miroslava Duma. Joining forces after working together on Buro 24/7 – the digital style platform Duma launched in 2011 – The Tot has become the one-stop hub of information that Adilova felt was missing: “Eventually, it got to the point where I had done so much research that I wanted to put all of my knowledge in one online destination. I wanted to build a place where moms could come and talk to one another, find answers to their problems, and also shop the best-of-the-best mother and baby products on the market.”
Growing up in Dagestan, she describes her upbringing fondly, “I was fortunate,” she says, “I grew up in a big loving family surrounded by lots of friends and cousins who I was very close to, so I don’t have any bad memories as a child. I did grow up during communism but it was just part of our reality.” Has her approach to life changed now she resides permanently stateside? “I probably have more of an American mentality with Russian superstitions and beliefs” she half jokes.
After moving to the US to study at Oklahoma State University, it was in Montenegro where she would meet Miroslava, who soon became her work partner in crime, “Mira is very, very hard working and focused, we rarely disagree. We both try to focus on areas where we know our strengths lie – so we can divide and conquer!”
Now expecting her second baby (she is 36 weeks pregnant), Nasiba shows no signs of slowing down and has big plans for The Tot. There is an aggressive growth plan in place and a number of collaborations in the pipeline, including nursery furniture, but her main vision hasn’t changed from what it was when they first launched the site: “I want us to become an authority in all things clean, green and ethical in the maternity and baby segment.”
To provide the best information, she’s been turning to the experts, such as London-based natural childbirth guru Gowrie Motha. “I am a strong believer in her Gentle Birth Method,” says Nasiba. “I feel that by following her advice I keep myself grounded, calm, healthy and problem free during pregnancy. I was so lucky to have her help me with my first birth and am looking forward to working with her on my second birth. She was very much one of the people who inspired me to start The Tot.”
And how do you run a well-oiled machine? Well she practices what she preaches. “I love the selection of clean, chemical free beauty products we curated for TheTot.com,” says Nasiba. “I eat healthy food and stay away from anything sugary – apart from an occasional cheat when I’m really craving something, but nothing processed. I exercise lightly until about 34-35 weeks and then transfer to yoga and swimming for the home run. And I also find reflexology and Ayurvedic hot oil massages very beneficial.”
Adilova’s natural sense of drive, dedication and passion is evident in speaking to her and you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who juggles as many balls as she. Starting a business, while being snapped at the most stylish events and running around after a toddler with one on the way, is a lifestyle not for the faint of heart. From Russia to Dallas, Nasiba is a force to be reckoned with wherever she goes, and this is one woman whose movements we’re excited to follow.
