The Spanish model on keeping things simple through it all
Eugenia Silva is the epitome of beauty and brains. With a career in modelling that includes gracing the covers of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire and Vogue and catwalks of Prada, Elie Saab, Dior and Versace, the 41-year old Spanish model also has a degree in law. “I actually wanted to be an architect,” she says. Despite not putting it into practice as a career, Eugenia still considers her studies worthwhile. “My law degree is actually really useful, even for the basic things in life!”
Expecting her second baby next month, Eugenia is not shy of saying her pregnancy has been really easy, even though her schedule seems otherwise: in-between modelling, writing a blog for Hola [the Spanish edition of Hello], running her own website and managing her own online shop ‘EU Style’, she also makes time for initiatives like Plan International, which works to improve the lives of children in over 50 countries including Africa and Asia. “I can’t complain – but I am starting to feel heavy as this baby is huge! The bigger he gets the more tired I get, but I haven’t yet stopped working.”
But with a large reliance on looking her best for a shoot, how does she cope when Estée Lauder requires her to climb into a giant marble tub just one month away from giving birth? “I’ve been shooting a lot of close-ups,” she laughs. As you’d expect for a model of her calibre, her skincare regime must be pretty well honed by now, but has this changed when expecting? “I take good care of it. I go to a place every week to have a full-body massage and I use a lot of natural oils on my skin and hair. My skin is actually at its best when I’m pregnant. I make sure I eat well but I tend to gain a lot of weight during pregnancy, there is nothing I can do to avoid it!”
When she’s not working, Eugenia is doting on her three-year old son Alfonso, who she organizes her work schedule around “so I can be with [him], and work when he is napping or at school.” According to her, he isn’t aware of his impending sibling. “I want him to be part of the whole process but he isn’t aware of how his life is about to change. He doesn’t talk about it much, he just refers to himself as a big brother. Poor guy!”
Eugenia and her husband have recently swapped the city for the beach, which is fortunate timing for her as she gets to wear long, floaty dresses in the last stages of her pregnancy: “I like how they wrap around my belly, it makes me feel protected. Nine in the Mirror has the best selection of long dresses, by designers including Valentino and Emilia Wickstead. The site is also really good for finding the perfect pair of leather trousers, I recently got some from Current Elliott which is one of my favourite brands.”
When I ask how she’s been styling the bump for events, or work occasions she shies away from bold looks and prefers to keep things simple. “That truly is the key – your bump is already making enough of a statement! I tend to keep it simple with minimal make-up and a lot of flat shoes. Maternity jeans help a lot and I like to wear oversize clothes anyway so they still fit me.” Taking the law unto herself, this is a woman who knows what she’s doing and manages to look amazing while doing so – what else would you expect from a model with a law degree?!
